Septic Tank tips you should be aware of:

  • Pump your septic tank every three to five years, depending how much use the system gets. Clean your septic tank through the manhole in the center of the top of your septic tank, rather than the inspection ports above the inlet and outlet baffles (demand this).
  • If you use a garbage "dispose-all", pump your tank more frequently. Or, remove the garbage grinder and compost your kitchen scraps. Garbage grinder use leads to buildups of grease.
  • Keep kitchen grease, such as bacon fat and deep fryer oil, out of your septic system. It is not broken down easily by your system, can clog your drain field, potentially harming the groundwater.

More than two-thirds of New Mexico's farm income comes from livestock products, especially sheep. Cotton, pecans, and sorghum are the most important field crops. Corn, peanuts, beans, onions, chilies, and lettuce are also grown. Tourist attractions include the Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Inscription Rock at El Morro National Monument, the ruins at Fort Union, Billy the Kid mementos at Lincoln, the White Sands and Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monuments, Bandelier National Monument, and the Chaco Culture National Historical Park.
